Product Description
Mortlake Terrace (1827) : This painting, one of two views of Mortlake Terrace painted by Turner, is a view of the road towards Villa. Turner established the quiet mood of the late-afternoon scene with two ivy-covered elm trees, whose soft, feathery leaves and curving limbs frame the painting. Long shadows create elegant patterns on the lawn that almost obscure the human element in the scene. Two figures are watching the Lord Mayor's ceremonial barge. The stable mass of the classical gazebo, the delicate linear clarity of its architectural details, and the carefully depicted windows in the building coexist in Turner's vision with the heavy impasto of the setting sun's rays create mesmerising ambience. *JMW (Joseph Mallord William) TURNER (1775-1851) was one of the most important English Romantic Painters of the 19th century. He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings. Turner's imagination was sparked by shipwrecks, fires, and natural phenomena such as sunlight, storm, rain, and fog. He was fascinated by the violent power, turbulence and tidestorms of the sea. It's said that his last words before death were, 'The Sun is God!'
