While living in Europe, Souza established his uniqueness which was an amalgamation of Western and Eastern styles of art. He was perceived to be inspired by a wide range of sources like the Spanish Romanesque painting, the work of European Old Masters, tribal art from Africa, European Modernism, and Catholicism etc. * Francis Newton Souza (1924 � 2002) was a great Indian modernist, born in Goa. Though he spent majority of his life in New York, was much influenced by Goan living, culture and atmosphere. He was the first post-independence Indian artist to gain high visibility in the West. Both low-life and high energy displayed Souza's style. In 6 decades, Souza experimented number of genres and styles, but it's probably his strong figurative practice, his line drawings and series of 'black paintings'.�In recent years Souza's Paintings have been sold for over a million dollars.�At the core of Souza's imagination was the conviction that the negative facets of society should not be silenced, that they should be aired and addressed.
