Product Description
Bridge of Sighs & Ducal Palace, Venice (1833) : This was Turners first view in oils of the city of Venice. He exhibited it at the Royal Academy in 1833, more than a decade after he had been in Venice. The painting is less a response to the city itself, than an act of homage to the greatest painter of Venice, Antonio Canaletto, who had lived in the early part of the previous century. Turner in fact shows Canaletto in the left foreground, working at an easel. *JMW (Joseph Mallord William) TURNER (1775-1851) was one of the most important English Romantic Painters of the 19th century. He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings. Turner's imagination was sparked by shipwrecks, fires, and natural phenomena such as sunlight, storm, rain, and fog. He was fascinated by the violent power, turbulence and tidestorms of the sea. It's said that his last words before death were, 'The Sun is God!'
