Francis Newton Souza (1924 2002) was a great Indian modernist, born in Goa. Though he spent majority of his life in New York, was much influenced by Goan living, culture and atmosphere. He was the first post-independence Indian artist to gain high visibility in the West. Both low-life and high energy displayed Souza's style. In 6 decades, Souza experimented number of genres and styles, but it's probably his strong figurative practice, his line drawings and series of 'black paintings'.In recent years Souza's Paintings have been sold for over a million dollars. At the core of Souza's imagination was the conviction that the negative facets of society should not be silenced, that they should be aired and addressed. Be it the hypocrisy of the Church, the greed of the upper classes or the repression of sexuality in a Khajura nation, the underbelly of life has been exposed.
