Product Description
Fort Vimieux (1831) : The depiction is of a wrecked sail ship, and it was painted in the style for which Turner is most remembered which resembles the one of the Impressionists, the art movement that would follow Romanticism. The subject depicted here refers to the Napoleonic Wars and the English participation in it. The sun itself is the only element which Turner depicted using an almost pure orange, which gives it an incandescent aspect. It looks compelling. In the foreground, we can see the anchor which is being dragged by the tilted boat. *JMW (Joseph Mallord William) TURNER (1775-1851) was one of the most important English Romantic Painters of the 19th century. He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings. Turner's imagination was sparked by shipwrecks, fires, and natural phenomena such as sunlight, storm, rain, and fog. He was fascinated by the violent power, turbulence and tidestorms of the sea. It's said that his last words before death were, 'The Sun is God!'
