The controversial subject of a naked woman lunching with two clothed men provoked controversy when Manet's piece was displayed at the Salon des Refuses in 1863. Monet opted to paint his own version of Luncheon on the Grass two years later. *CLAUDE MONET (1845-1870) is one of the world's most famous painters, well-known today for his series of serene water lilies paintings, Claude Monet was instrumental in forging an entirely new direction for the world of art & impressionism.
