Product Description
The Dort Packet-Boat from Rotterdam (1818) : The painting shows a view of the harbour of Dordrecht. It is the finest example of the influence of Dutch marine painting on Turner's work. In 1832, John Constable wrote of the picture, "I remember most of Turner's early works; amongst them one of singular intricacy and beauty; it was a canal with numerous boats making thousands of beautiful shapes, and I think the most complete work of a genius I ever saw". Calm waters of the Merwede River, and in the glowing, even light depicted in the paintingthat peace was central to the flowering of artistic creation. *JMW (Joseph Mallord William) TURNER (1775-1851) was one of the most important English Romantic Painters of the 19th century. He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings. Turner's imagination was sparked by shipwrecks, fires, and natural phenomena such as sunlight, storm, rain, and fog. He was fascinated by the violent power, turbulence and tidestorms of the sea. It's said that his last words before death were, 'The Sun is God!'
