*The Windmill at Amsterdam* (1871): The historic Zaandam mill, which once stood along Amsterdam's Onbekende Canal, is depicted in this artwork. The mill was used to extract yellow, red, and blue dyes from coloured woods, but when chemical dyes were developed, the mill went bankrupt, and it was demolished in 1876. Monet's vibrant use of colours in the work appears to reference the dyes from the building's historic use, with the colours appearing to seep out into the canal. Van Gogh was deeply influenced by Monet's stunning use of bright colour and crystal sky. *CLAUDE MONET (1845-1870) is one of the world's most famous painters, well-known today for his series of serene water lilies paintings, Claude Monet was instrumental in forging an entirely new direction for the world of art & impressionism. His distinctive use of colour, vision, and conformation would have a long influence on fine art, inspiring many great artists like Van Gogh.
