* 'Three Girls' (1935) : This one is the first Masterpiece after she returns to India from Europe in 1934. This painting won the gold medal at the annual exhibition of the ‘The Bombay Art Society’ in 1937. With this painting, she began to move away from the academic, realist style of the painting in which she was schooled, and towards a flatter, more modern composition. It depicts 3 young women, on the threshold of adulthood and marriage, their hapless expressions indicating artists’ empathy. *AMRITA SHER-GIL (1913-1941) is considered an important Indian painter of the 20th century & one of the most influential figures in Indian modern art, whose reputation stands on a par with that of the Bengal Renaissance pioneers. She was a keen reader and pianist too. Sher-Gil's paintings are among today's most expensive by Indian women painters, but few have remembered her work while she was alive. After spending her life in France, Turkey, Hungary; she moved to Shimla, India. She started to paint extensively and travelled widely, keen to observe and represent Indian villagers and their way of life.
